About Riga
Riga has hundreds of ways for enticing visitors – its rich history, architecture, spacious gardens and parks, museums, art galleries and world-class opera... and daily treats like a walk in the enormous colorful central market or going to a cosy café, club or pub...
Riga is best known for its architectural legacy. The Old Town has preserved a glorious range of old, older and very old buildings; the 'Old Riga' is listed in UNESCO's prestigious World Heritage List, and is made up of buildings from the Middle Ages and subsequent periods of Swedish, Polish, Russian and German influence.
During the Middle Ages Rīga was a mighty seaport, the largest
city in the Swedish Empire during the 17th century, a leading port for the Russian Empire in the 18th and 19th centuries, and a powerhouse centre for commerce and trade in the entire region.
By the late 19th century, most of the original fortification walls had been pulled down and the city centre quickly expanded. As a result, another marvellous architectural style enjoyed a golden age for which Riga is now famous - Art Nouveau.
